The mechanic came this morning and fixed the windlass. It was just a loose wire, in the one place I hadn't looked. A bit annoyed with myself for not fixing it on my own but very happy it wasn't something more serious and expensive.
We are staying another night here as we have met up with a very nice Danish couple, Vickie and Jacob, that we met earlier in the trip. So a bit of time today to explore the town.

The plan for today was a quick sail down the coast and anchor by the town of Calpe. However when we arrived the windlass (the thing that makes the anchor go out and back in) decided to have a holiday. This is not good but if it is going to happen being right next to a marina is handy. We are now in the marina and the mechanic comes tomorrow at 9am.
We left Alicante and sailed a little way up the coast to Villajoyosa. Zoe and Ramsey came with us and Chris and Nicola met us there. A very nice town with brightly painted buildings.
We have had a great couple of days in Alicante with Nicola, Chris, Zoe and Ramsey.
After leaving Mar Menor we had one night at Torrevieja anchored inside the harbour. A good calm anchorage but not much to see ashore. From there we went to marina De las Dunas. This is a marina up a river. The pilot book said the river was 6 meters deep but we went down to 0.2 meters under our keel getting in. We were about to turn back but some friendly locals came and guided us in. Two nights at this pleasent spot exploring on our bikes. We are now in Alicante with Amanda's sister Nicola and family. They have driven all the way from the UK to see us which is great.
From the big city of Cartagena our next stop is quite a contrast. The Mar Menor is a small enclosed sea or bloody big lagoon depending on your point of view. We are parked next to a little island in the middle which has a few ruined buildings and a very large number of seagulls. So chilling out, reading
our books and relaxing are the things to do here. We will also explore the island this afternoon, or perhaps tomorrow...... We spent the day exploring the city on our trusty new bikes. Really loving the bikes as you get to explore much further and you dont get so hot. A lot of the attractions are closed on Monday so we saved a fortune on entrance fees. We arrived here this afternoon, that's us on the end of the last pier.
Cartagena has been around for ages and has been invaded by almost everyone. so it's chocker block full of old ruins and dead historic stuff. Here are a couple of examples. We anchored here for one night, a very pretty spot. We saw an old castle on the top of the hill over the bay but when we climbed up it was actually an abandoned modern development. there are loads of these along the coast where huge projects are started and then the money runs out.
our next stop was something a little different. Cala San Pedro is an isolated little beach accessible only by walking track or boat. It is a naturist hangout so is full of nudey-rudies. We spent a pleasant afternoon swimming and relaxing while embracing the naturist spirit. There is also a 16th century ruined castle there.
