We have left the gulf and now started to explore the Cyclades islands. Sunset at a very calm anchorage Anchored under the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion So far we have been to Kea, Kithnos and now Siros Amanda goes to church We have been having a bit of rain lately A great opportunity to wash all the salt and dust off the boat. We are now in Siros which is the capital of the Cyclades island group. Not our original plan, however our fridge cooling fan has begun to die and this is the most likley place to get a new one. Might be here for a few days.

Since coming through the Corinth Canal we have been slowly heading eastish. We are enjoying exploring new places again. Korfos, our first stop. Next stop Epidavros Epidavros has an ancient theater dating back to 800BC There are lots of ancient ruins to explore We saw this Greek God statue that was still reasonably intact. Our favourate sort of anchorage. A big bay with lots of room and a little town to visit close by but not too close. We are now in Aegina in the harbour. The main attraction of this town for us is a Volafone shop where we can top up our phone.
Today we accidently went through the Corinth Canal and into the Aegean sea. We didn't mean to, the plan was to anchor on the Corinth side and go through tomorrow but when we got to Corinth it was blowing a steady 40 knots in the bay. Fortunately there was a convoy about to go through (big ships followed by yachts) so we joined on the end. It was a bit exciting going into the enterance to the canal with big waves smashing on the breakwater but once inside it was calm and smooth. Also calm at the other end which is amazing as the canal is only a couple of miles long. Coming in through the narrow enterance in a steady 40 knots was interesting We were tail end Charlie going through Amanda rugged up following the stormy weather on the Corinth side. It is a bit grey and rainy Amanda doing all the work.
We are making our way through the Gulf of Corinth on our way to go through the Corinth Canal. We are taking our time to explore a bit as there is plenty to see. The little harbour on the island of Trezonia. Our next stop and the town of Galaxidhi. From Galaxidhi we took a trip up to the ancient site of Delphi, home of the Oracle. The Oracle explained the true meaning of existance and the path to everlasting happyness but said I wasn't allowed to tell you.
After leaving Zakynthos we had a couple of nights in Patras. This is Greece's third largest city and very interesting. Not touristy so has a real feel about it. We sailed down to the southern end of Zakynthos island and spent a few nights in Kiri, a very pretty little town. I have added a few more solar lights to the boat. I feel you can never have enough however Amanda feels you can. This olive tree is so old that we found 'Homer waz here' scratched into the trunk. Zakynthos island is famous for sea turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs. We didn't see any of them but here are some little turtles we saw in a puddle Samos the snake Another bit of wildlife we came accross on our walk.
We have been afloat for about 5 days and been having a busy time. Everything is working on the boat, even the crew. Our outboard motor would not go until we took it to a local mechanic who got it sorted.
We are now in Zakynthos for a few days before heading for the Aegean. We are almost ready to begin this years adventure. Aztec Gold goes back in the water tomorrow.
We have big plans for this season some of which we may carry but we will be exploring new places. |
