The part of Sardinia we are in now is popular with the super yacht crowd. Yesterday we anchored in a bay full of moorings for the super yachts. We could have a mooring for 150 euros or anchor for free. We anchored.

Yesterday we anchored in front of this old fort. It was built in 18something to repel a French invasion that never happened. Today is is a slightly crumbling ruin that is completly open for you to wander about at will. The old barricks. Gun implacements Lots of interesting tunnels. Where you might find unexpected things. And finaly todays photo of AG
The Maddalenas are a small group of islands off the north east tip of Sardinia. They are a national park and you need a permit to visit. They are a great cruising area with many lovely anchorages. They do however get insanely busy in high season so we have come here now to beat the rush. We had this anchorage to ourselves which is a rare thing around here. We are moving around, only a few miles each day. In this bay there is an old abandoned quarry. In the quarry there is this poor bloke who never got finished. As a result he is completely beside himself. However Amanda is doing her best to cheer him up.
We have been slowly making our way along the northern end of Sardinia. This is an area we didn't see last time. This is our first stop after crossing from Menorca. A wide sandy bay with crystal clear water. The photo shows the pass leading into the bay. Our next stop was off a little town called Isola Rossa. Some good walks plus a supermarket and fresh water. Plus a very nice and inexpensive pizza restaurant for dinner. You see these old watch towers dotted everywhere along the coast. I think they got the idea from the Lord of the Rings movies. Tonight we are at Capo Tosta. A popular beach place but a wide sheltered bay for us away from the crowds. Here they are my two favourite things. Amanda being the most favourite of course.
We have just sailed across from Menorca, Spain to Sardinia Italy. It was 198 nautical miles and took about 30 hours. We left at 7am and arrived at 1pm next day. Here are some interesting details:
Top speed - 9.1 knots (18 km/h) Average speed - 6.5 knots (13 km/h) Sailing done - 13 hours (otherwise motorsailing) Fish cought - zero Meals - breakfast, muesli with fruit and yogurt. Lunch, pasta salad with tuna and sweetcorn. Dinner, steak and kidney pie. Breakfast, muesli etc again. Lunch, toasty fry pan sandwiches. In between snacks, many. Overnight watches 3 hour shifts starting from 6pm. Dolphins sighted - 2 Large ships avoided in the night - 1 All in all a good passage and a lovely destination. We will relax now and do some more exploring tomorrow. We came to Puerto de Addaya on the north side of Menorca intending that it be an overnight stop before we headed off to Sardinia. However it is so lovely we have decided to stay for a few day. The cala is right next to a national park so today we went for a big walk. Living on the sea we really enjoy the oppertunity to explore inland and see trees and other nature. Also featured here is a special Menorcan gate. The walk took us to a rugged beach where we spotted this unusually shaped rock, amazing. And here are some cute baby ducks that visit the anchored boats at breakfast time. Because everyone likes cute baby ducks.
We are doing a quick trip around Menorca before we head off to Sardinia next weekend. There are lots of remains of ancient civilisations on the island, such as these cave dwellings along the rocky coast. This was our anchorage last night featuring some more modern dwellings. Wherever I go I am always on the lookout for taps to fill up our water tanks. This one was the best yet. And here we are in our anchorage tonight. Sunset over the old watchtower at the head of the cala. It is rather nice here.
We have enjoyed our few days in Mahon exploring the city. We have walked about 15km per day getting about which is a nice change from being mainly on the boat. We have enjoyed some nightlife. And some day life. We have chatted to some of the locals. And been to all the attractions. This is the museum which was suprisingly interesting. We even took on a new crew member. This is Basil who will be helping out at meal times.
We are in Mahon few a few nights parked on a floating pontoon in the harbour. It is a little wooden island but with power and fresh water supplied. The other boats on our island are in storage so we have it to ourselves. We jump in the dinghy to go to town only 2 minutes away. It's very peaceful and much better than being in the noisy marina. Here are some photos on Mahon. A very grand and genteel city.
We have enjoyed hopping up the coast of Mallorca and have found some good anchorages thanks to navigator Amanda. This morning we crossed over to the next island Menorca and now anchored in the main harbour of Mahon. Here are some photos of our last few days in Mallorca. |
