We are often asked this question from people who talk with us about our trip and it is a very difficult question to answer. The problem is we went to so many great places it is hard to choose. One answer I sometimes give is “the next place” because I generally enjoy the journey more than the destination. The excitement and uncertainty of heading off to new places, the possibilities just over the horizon. But to answer the question more directly here are a few places that stand out for one reason or another: Dartmouth UK Memorable because it was so unexpected. Dartmouth is located where the river Dart empties into the English Channel. After entering in through a narrow gap in the high rocky coast the river opens out to create the harbour. The pastel coloured houses tumble down the banks on each side. The weather was a bit pants when we were there so the photos don’t do it justice. A very pretty town. Ile d Yue (France) A small island off the Atlantic coast of France. We anchored in a beautiful sandy bay, explored the amazing scenery and had one of our best lunches out in a small local café. Santander (Spain) Our arrival point into Spain. A large neat and tidy city. Great beaches, interesting architecture, and good shopping. We got stuck here for 9 days waiting for the weather but it was a great place to get stuck. Cudillero (Spain) Free mooring in a great little fishing port overlooked by a picture postcard town perched on the surrounding hillsides. Muros (Spain) A great anchorage in a quite bay all to ourselves Porto (Portugal) They make Port there. Culatra, Faro Lagoon (Portugal) Lots of yachties, a nice social time. Great beaches and great weather. Guadinia River (Portugal/Spain)
The border between Portugal and Spain. You can sail up the river for many miles, some people never leave. Fun to pop across the river between Spain and Portugal to explore the pretty towns on either side.

We were pretty diligent bloggers during our trip and did hundreds of blogs. Some were informative (I thought) and some were entertaining (I hoped) but this is the one we got the most feedback about, by a long way. So here it is again by reasonably popular demand.
It’s Not all Beer and Skittles (posted June 2014) It has occurred to me as I review this blog that we are focusing on the good bits and not telling you about all the really tough times we are also experiencing. So to balance things out I have been thinking about some of the darker times we have been through so far. The Walk One day we went for a walk and there was a light shower of rain and we got a little bit wet. To be honest it was quite nice as it was a hot day and it cooled things down a bit, but still it rained. The Jam One day we opened our jar of very nice fig jam to spread on our fresh baguette and the jam had gone a wee bit mouldy. We had to go get a tea spoon and scoop the furry bit off. The rest of the jam was delicious. The Flies One day while we were sailing along a whole load of flies came and settled on the boat. They stayed around for an hour or so and then went away. Some of them got splattered by us with an old tea towel and they stayed a bit longer. The Chocolate One day some of the chocolate in the chocolate cupboard (yes we have a chocolate cupboard. This is necessary for the happiness of the crew and for the safety of the captain) started to melt and we had to eat a lot and put the rest into the fridge. So you see it can be pretty tough at times out here battling the elements, and you thought we were having fun!! |
