From the little harbour of Vathi (last blog), this morning we walked the 5km up to a volcano. Well actually we didn't have to walk all the way. Some lovely locals stopped and gave us a lift as far as this little village where there was some sort of celebration at the local church. From the road it's another half a km up to the top (cute sign). It's a nice walk up With lots of impressive views out over the gulf You can see all around from the top When you get to the crater you can climb down inside. The sides are very straight, it looks man-made. This volcano is very dormant, by the way.
The walk back down is much easier.

We are still messing about in the Soronic Gulf. It has been quite windy so we haven't been moving around much. This was a historic site on the island of Aigena. Complete with the visiting Godess. Cool old house come castle Turns out Nemo is in Greece. He floated past us at anchor in Korfos. I think he will make a very good octopus lure. This is where we are right now. In a little harbour called Vathi. From here there is a 5km walk up to an old volcano which we are told is worth a visit. We will do that in the morning when it is cooler.
We have slowed down a lot and been doing a bit of chilling out. We have spent a week or so in Poros which is in a big enclosed bay. This is the bay of Poros. You can anchor near the town for some shopping/nightlife or down the other end for some quiet time. Amanda matching the flowers Amanda exploring a fixer-upper The pilot guide says this little harbour has room for one or two boats to anchor. We got there first but by the end of the evening there were 14 yachts at anchor. Happily no bumps in the night however. This might be Greece's smallest church.
One of the reasons we came over to the Soronic Gulf was to get away from the Meltemi wind. However it has been unusually windy here so our hopes have not been entirely fulfilled. This is Yerakas where we parked for the night. There are lots of ancient sites to visit along this coast. This is the ancient Acropolis of Zarax. We went to the island of Spetsai which is famous for bring very green and tree covered. Unfortunatley there had been a fire in the bay two days before. This is what it looks like normally. This is a bay on the other side of the island that escaped the fire. From there we went to Porto Kheli which is a very large sheltered bay packed full of boats. Good for a visit to the supermarket but very noisy at night with 4 nightclubs competing to be the loudest. We only stayed one night. It is less windy now but this means it has become very very hot. Can we have the wind back now please.
We are now in Monemvasia at the bottom tip of Greece. It is an amazing place, see below. We left Milos at first light for the 65 mile sail accross. Nice passage with some good sailing breezes and some motoring. This is Monemvasia. It it an ancient fortified island connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. In the old days there used to be a drawbridge. This is what it looks like in the flesh. Following are some photos of the village. We took about a hundred but here is a small sample. It is windy this week so we are chilling out in the sheltered secure harbour for a few days.
